Video Game Shapeshifter Nick part 1

The first in the group of fiction kin in Keagan Academy is Nick who was crazy in love with speed.  He had ran fast since he was three.  But one day he found out why it was so.  "Nick, breakfast!". His mom shouted.  Nick woke up with a start.   The news said it would be 50 degrees outside, so he went and put his orange t shirt on, jeans, and then a light jacket.  It's not too cold for a Chicagoan he thought.  Nick ran to the kitchen and was greeted with pancakes and sausages.  His sister Rachel, looked at her brother and continued eating.  She always was looking up to him.  She was ten and he was seventeen. "Good morning Nick!". Rachel said happily.  Nick however,  wasn't feeling the best but he said good morning anyway.  He had a weird dream last night about running faster than he ever did in the huge city.  "What's wrong Nick?" Rachel said pretty concerned.  Since Nick was pretty close to his little sister, he decided he could tell her but he dared not tell his mother.  She was pretty judgemental and probably help him in the worst way possible.  "Well Rachel, I was dreaming about running." Nick said.  "You had that dream all the time.". Rachel said.
"I know but this time I was faster than the speed of sound."
"Do you think I should tell mom?"
Nick looked down at her.  "No."
"But you may be fiction kin."
Nick was pretty much afraid of that.  What would his mom think? She was one of the few who never awakened herself so she pretty much believed that she was mundane.  What to do...

Before long it was time to go to school.  Rachel and Nick said their goodbyes and Nick ran to his one block school.  Little did he know that his life may change forever.
At school, Nick was paying attention to his classwork as he was trying his best to get a national honor award.  Maybe someday he thought.  "Hello class." The teacher said happily.  "Today we will start with...". Nick unattentively zoomed out of reality and came to his daydreams of winning.  In his daydreams the principal was congratulating everybody that won the NHS awards.  "Congratulations students of Willow Brook academy.  You can now light the torch."   As everybody one got through with lighting the torch and receiving a medal,  Nick was next in line.  Suddenly, everything turned dark and Nick was in a void.  He tried to wake from it but he couldn't.  "Nick?" A voice said.  Nick turned around but saw nothing.  "Sorry to snap you out of it but I need to talk to you."
"Who are you?" Nick said feeling pretty frightened.
I'm Sonic." The voice said.  It soon appeared as a blue hedgehog with red shoes on.  Nick was pretty weireded out.  "Sonic the hedgehog." The hedgehog said finishing his greeting.
"Okay... what are you doing here Sonic?"  Nick said.
"I'm here to tell you that soon you will be awakened.". Sonic said proudly.
A cold death like feeling raced to Nick's mind.  "What?"
"I said--"  Sonic was cut off.
"I know what you said Sonic."
"Aren't you happy?"
"No I have a very judgemental mom.  You don't understand Sonic.  If I become awakened then I may lose her."
Sonic's smile suddenly dimmed.  "Ok  Nick.  But it is going to happen soon."
"How soon?"
Before Sonic could answer there was a sound of a finger snapping.  The blue hedgehog disappeared.
"Nick?! Can you hear me?" The teacher asked.
Nick snapped back up with a start but was totally out of it.  He couldn't remember anything but the conversation he and Sonic had.  He decided to answer anyway.
"Yes sensei?" Nick asked.
"Nice use of the Japanese word.  Do you know the answer to the question?"
"What question?"
The class giggled.
"Nick you gotta pay attention in class.  If this keeps up I'm talking to your parents come rain or shine.". The teacher meant it too.  Nick was trying hard to do work but always had his head in the clouds daydreaming about awakening his abilities.  He hoped that someday his mom would do the same thing so that she could stop taking the process the wrong way.  At the same time he was scared for his life at how she would react to it.
At gym, the strangest thing happened... the gym teacher suddenly said,  "Do you see that beautiful scenery to your left?". Everyone looked at at it.  It was filled with pools and slides. Even food concession stands.  Nick suddenly realized that he was hungry.  He didn't eat any lunch as he was playing an addictive game on the computer during divsion at lunchtime.  His stomach was growling for anything to eat. " You're going there by running from this school to there.  Consider this a field trip.  Oh the food is my treat.". The gym teacher said.  No wonder he asked for money,  Nick thought.
"Ready..."
Nick crouched like a tiger ready for the pounce.   So did other students.  "Set, go!"
Off the students ran for almost a mile.  As they ran,  Nick was starting to get worn out.  Why did I have to skip lunch?  Nick thought.   He thought about eating some fries with cheese, bacon and ketchup.  No, a hot dog.  No....
He slowed down and the other kids trailed past him.  Dripping with sweat,  he thought about running again but then stopped.  He was just too weak.  "I... can't do it."
Suddenly a familiar voice spoke to him.  It was Sonic's.  "You can do it Nick! Believe in yourself!"
Nick at first doubted but suddenly out of nowhere he got a second wind.  The wind moved the direction of the paradise pool.
"I gotta follow the wind". Nick said through his huffing and puffing. As he ran, the wind soon merged with him.  He soon felt like he never ran in his life.  He went faster and faster, passing all the students  as they looked dumbfounded at him.  Nick turned his head and smiled.  The other students looked pretty freaked out as Nick's hair turned spiky and went from black to blue and his eyes turned green.  He finally made it to the stop and waited a while for everyone to come.  He didn't realize the change went on as his clothes changed to a blue jacket,  peach shirt.  The jeans however stayed the same.
"Good work Nick and congratulations on being the first even though I didn't have that as an assignment.". The gym teacher said smiling.  "Ah it was nothing.". Nick said.  The students looked at Nick with awe.  "What happened to Nick?". One girl said.  "What do you mean what happened?". Nick said confused.  "Nick's inner fiction kin has been awakened.   said the gym teacher.  He now possess great speed just like his character.  "WHAT?". Said Nick.
"Yeah Nick, you're a man now. Not quite like me yet but..."
"Oh no... Oh no..." said Nick so worried.
"Congrats Nick.". One student said.  The rest followed.
"No don't congratulate me,  I did something wrong..."
The bell rang signaling that his final class had ended and went home.
He was not without a surprise...
"Hey Nick.". Said Rachel so happily...  She came into the car and found that Nick had undergone a change just like... her?!
"Oh god-- oh hi Rachel. What's up?"
"I was awakened today.  Isn't it great?". She had gold hair and two fluffy tails resembling flames.  Her blouse and yellow pants were staying the same.  Nick and Rachel finally have their marks.
"Yeah that's great sis.". Nick said sadly.  The two kids finally came to their house where they were greeted by their mom.  As he pulled up at their house,  Nick told Rachel not to say anything about the awakening yet.  He was pretty sure his mom would do something pretty bad.
"What happened to your hair?  What's with those tails?" Nicks mom asked.  She really wanted to know.
"Er...well...look er... its Halloween!". Nick said uncomfortably.
"No it's not Nick that was a week ago.". His mom said.
"Yeah what are you talking about?  We got awakened." Rachel said.  She was pretty innocent.
"Rachel no!" Nick screamed trying to stop Rachel.
"Well it's true.". Rachel said.
"So my own children has gone through this.  If only your father could have seen this.". Nick's mom said.
"So you're not upset?". Nick asked.
"No just surprised that you tried to tried to keep it secret.  Your father tried the same thing."
"He did?"
"Yes he did.  Let's come in and I'll tell you about this whole thing."
The three went in the house.  Suddenly Sonic's voice came back through Nick's mind.
"Nick we are one now." Sonic said.
Nick was creeped out.  His mom knew what was going on and told nick about the awakening.
"Nick, as you know,  I have never successfully awakened my abilities.  You have."
"How do you awaken it?  All I did was daydream."  Nick said.
"You either have to do something familiar to your character or summon him or her in your mind."
"Just like I did!". Rachel said happily.
"What did you do?". Nick said.
"I'm not telling you."
"Come on Rachel we trust each other any other time."
"As I was saying..." Nick and Rachel's mom, Eliza went on, "There are many ways to find it.  You just have to find out that way."
Nick pondered all through the night about his mother and what she said about awakening the fiction kin.  He so missed his divorced father as well.  If only you were here to show us who you really are he thought.
